100 Day Challenge #71: Embrace an all natural "pitti" party

My mom couldn't fathom talking about "pitti" problems online, so this one is all me! I can't imagine I'm the only one that has seriously struggled with finding the perfect deodorant, so I'm happy to share my journey. Sneak peak: it has a happy ending in the all-natural world!

I can unabashedly say that I've been searching for the perfect deodorant for over ten years, and I'm pretty sure I've tried them all!

I guess I'm just a bit pitti-cular when it comes to my deodorant and everything seemed to stop working after a while. I can't even begin to count the number of deodorants (be it roll-ons, sticks, sprays, you name it) that I left half empty. I'll leave you with this mental image: when I left for college, there were so many unfinished deodorant bars in my bathroom cupboard that my mother didn't have to buy any for years!

Quite obviously, my deodorant past is pretty embarrassing and pitti-ful (yes, more pitti puns to come because what is a blog about deodorant without them). But roughly a year ago, I was so defeated by my deodorant situation that I figured I had nothing to lose and got serious about trying some all-natural brands. I'll admit, I was skeptical that anything natural could help if even the strongest clinical-strength ones didn't quite cut the mustard, but I was open-minded and dove into the deep end.

I purchased the first few at our farmer's market; they were so bad they're not even worth mentioning. But after lots of research and reading many customer reviews, I've hit a lucky streak recently and thought I would share my top three. Although each of the products are quite different, I've rated them on a scale of 1-10 (1 being the worst and 10 the best) to help in my comparison.

Weleda Citrus 24h Deodorant Spray

Overall score: 7

Although this product isn't my overall favorite, it holds a special place in my heart because it was the first all-natural deodorant that gave me hope!

  • Odor protection: I'll start my review with the most import aspect of deodorant performance: odor protection. Most of the time, this deodorant worked great; I even danced the night away at a Mexican wedding and had no problems. However, on some heavy gardening days this summer when it was very hot and I was sweating a lot, let's just say I smelled a little too natural.

  • Sweat protection: I didn't feel like this spray helped stop sweating at all; there were even a couple of times when I could literally feel beads of sweat roll down from my pittis! Too much information? I know natural deodorants aren't antiperspirants, but I felt like I could do better in this department.

  • What I loved: The smell is so fresh and and when you spray this product on, you feel cool and even a little energized! It's in a recyclable glass bottle, it's free of aluminum salts and colorants and made with essential oils.

  • What I didn't love: The occasional letdown on the odor and sweat protection front.

Myro Deodorant: Solar Flare Scent

Overal Score: 8

I heard about this deodorant from a family friend who was giving it a try. She passed along a coupon for $10 off my first purchase, so I figured I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did!

  • Odor protection: Awesome! I never had a bad odor protection day when I was using it. I couldn't believe it!

  • Sweat protection: This was great as well. The formula uses natural cornstarch as a way to help keep you dry, and it definitely worked!

  • What I loved: The Myro website is great, and I loved their refillable cartridge model. You choose your case color and the scent you want (they have fun descriptions online, and the one I got was great) and then every three months you get refill cartridges sent, and you just pop them into your case. Loved the low-waste approach. Their formula is vegan, gluten, soy and mineral oil free, aloe-based and has bacteria-neutralizing citrus elements.

  • What I didn't love: It melted all the time! From the melted bar when I opened the package to a big mess when I traveled to the occasional oily spot in my bathroom drawer, this deodorant kept melting and creating a mess, and it's the only reason I'm not giving it a 10. If you live somewhere that's not hot, this might not be a problem for you!

Sam's Natural Deo: Original Scent

Overall Score: 10

Love, love, love! Every day I've used Sam's Natural Deo has been pure pitti bliss! I think this is technically a men's product line, but who cares?!

  • Odor protection: AMAZING!

  • Sweat protection: Not sure how it does it, but sweat protection is great as well!

  • What I loved: This deodorant is aluminum-free, has no parabens, sulfates or dyes, and is vegan and cruelty-free. The top screws off (different, but I like it!), the packaging is recyclable, and the label is even produced with recycled paper and printed using non-toxic, biodegradable wax ink.

  • What I didn't love: I read the ingredients label, and everything was looking great (sodium bicarbonate, coconut oil, pumpkinseed oil, aloe vera leaf extract, etc.) until I saw "fragrance" listed at the very end. I try to stay away from this because you don't really know what it could be, so next time I'll get their unscented line since this one is fragrance-free.

I can't believe the decade-long search has finally ended with a pitti-perfect, all-natural deodorant!

So, pit some of your own all-natural deodorants against each other and find one that you love! If you're already using the perfect product, please share! Even though I love what I'm using, I'm always open to trying something new.
