The #noplasticstraws movement has thankfully been gaining momentum and many restaurants, business owners, and even cities have banned the use of plastic straws. If you haven't yet jumped onto the no plastic straw bandwagon, then now is the time!
It's estimated that Americans alone use 500 million plastic straws every day.
If that number doesn't shock you, then how about the fact that a New Plastics Economy report calculated that if we don't start changing our plastic habits, by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Plastic straws are among the top ten items found during beach cleanups, and that doesn't just mean that we have dirty oceans, marine life ingests plastic litter which threatens their survival.
Luckily, there are plenty of reusable options out there to replace plastic straws, so take your pick!
Stainless steel: they come in all shapes and sizes and are super chic looking.
Glass: they're more durable than you'd think and a great option if you don't like stainless steel straws.
Silicone: if you don't like the feel of a hard glass or stainless steel straw against your lips, this is the way to go. They come in tons of fun colors.
Copper: looking for a fancy straw to serve with a cocktail, this is it!
Don't forget to buy a straw cleaning brush so you can properly clean your reusable straws; most kits come with brushes but just keep an eye out for one.
So, have fun picking your favorite straw and start reusing it! Keep some in your car, purse, or at work so they're always accessible and you don't find yourself needing a plastic one.
